From the first clinical use of herapin, a blood thinner for open heart surgery in 1935 to the first pacemaker in 1950, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN has been leading the way in innovative cardiac discoveries for more than 75 years.

Celebrating Heart Month – Dr. Vivek Rao: The next Generation in Cardiac Care
In 2001, Dr. Vivek Rao became the youngest faculty member ever to join the University of Toronto’s cardiac surgery division. Ten years later, after building Canada’s largest Advanced Heart Failure Program, he’s has become the second youngest chief of cardiac surgery ever appointed at UHN’s Division of Cardiac Surgery, just months shy of the founding Chief, Dr. William Bigelow.
